Red Dot Award
Nico Less wins Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016
Ljubljana, 4 April 2016.
Nico Less chair by Donar was awarded with the Red Dot, the international distinction for high design quality. Participants from 57 nations had registered a total of 5,214 products and innovations for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016. Only products which set themselves apart considerably through their excellent design receive the sought-after quality seal from the international Red Dot jury.
Nico Less chair is a response to the human need to reduce our carbon imprint on the planet and to rediscover waste as an industrial material of the future. Re-thinking our philosophy of socially responsible, sustainable design, Primoz Jeza Studio has created a simple but unique chair made of recycled Felt (60% re-cycled PP bottles and 40% non-woven textile). By using just heat and pressure we achieved comfortable seating by adapting the shape to the human body. Chair base is made out of metal or wood and is linked to the seat with straps. The Nico Less chairs can be combined in compositions of various lengths or stored in vertical stacks. A tribute to the great industrial designer Niko Kralj, Nico Less chair is a revival of simplicity!
With 41 experts from all around the world, who are chosen according to strict rules, the Red Dot Award: Product Design guarantees a very high judging competence: Only freelance designers, design professors and specialised journalists – but not designers employed at companies potentially participating – are appointed to the jury.
The independent expert panel assesses each entry strictly and fairly, live and on site, according to criteria such as degree of innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility. Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award: “With their performances, the Red Dot winners not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but they also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions.”
About the Red Dot Design Award:
In order to appraise the wide scope of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award is broken down into the three distinct disciplines: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. With more than 17,000 entries in 2015 alone, it is one of the largest competitions in the world. It was in 1955 that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. The name and brand of the award were developed in the 1990s by Red Dot CEO, Professor Dr. Peter Zec. Since then the sought-after “Red Dot” is the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. Further information: www.red-dot.org.
Right on the dot: Beatnik Sound Station Chair was awarded
the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2013!
The red dot is one of the world’s most soughtafter design prizes. In an evaluation process lasting several days, each one of the 4,662 product creations submitted was tested, discussed and evaluated in detail, live and on site, by renowned experts. BEATNIK, The Sound Station Chair by DONAR scored big: BEATNIK was awarded an “honourable mention” by the 37-member red dot
jury for its unique design and functionality.
More than 1,200 guests from the world of design, industry, society and media will celebrate the winners of the “red dot award: product design” at the red dot gala on 1 July 2013, which traditionally takes place in Essen’s opera house, the impressive Aalto Theater. BEATNIK will then be put on display during a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum.
Beatnik, The Sound Station Chair was designed by Luka Stepan and Domen Gazvoda from Slovene design agency Gigodesign. It is a multi-purpose piece, a sound cocoon, ensuring a supreme user experience. It is the first chair with built-in Apple AirPlay technology, also supporting BlueTooth connectivity to virtually any device containing music and audio books such as laptop, mp3 player, mobile phone, tablet computer or even TV or Apple TV system.
The position of the built-in ADR Audio sound system with integrated amplifier under the seat ensures a supreme sound experience while the construction and form of the chair offers privacy and protection from surrounding noise. Beatnik offers a unique way of enjoying music or even making phonecalls anywhere, at home, in the office or in public spaces.
The strong steel frame and plywood sides construction, upholstered with polyurethane foam, ensures an ergonomic shape that enables the user to enjoy Beatnik in many different seating and resting positions – according to his moods or needs.
Prof. Dr. PETER ZEC, initiator and CEO of the red dot awards, has pointed out that strong design competence and economic success nowadays go hand in hand: “The winners of the ‘red dot award: product design 2013’ are the protagonists of a highly developed design culture and design industry. These days it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between well-designed products. It is often only in the details that the special qualities become apparent. However, those product creations that pass the test before the critical eyes of the international red dot jury will not disappear into the crowd and will be able to fend off global competition.”
The winning products in the red dot design museum
With around 2,000 products spread over an area of more than 4,000 square meters, the red dot design museum houses the largest exhibition of contemporary design worldwide. From 2 to 28 July 2013, the museum will host the traditional special exhibition of the award-winning products. In “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2013”, design enthusiasts can marvel at the latest trends at close quarters. Visitors are expressly invited to handle the pieces, allowing them to experience live in the breathtaking atmosphere of the red dot design museum the prizewinning design of BEATNIK by DONAR d.o.o.
